A plastic water junction or “bypass” as some call it is failing and allowing a rapid escape of coolant from the cooling system, leaving customers stranded on the side of the road or worse. The junction is located under the intake manifold and is difficult to see and access, many owners have been left needing a head gasket replacement as a result of the failure and subsequent engine overheating. The engine gives no warning signs of the impending failure and we have seen it on vehicles anywhere from 80,000kms to 190,000kms on the clock.
Mazda has since revised the part and supply a metal bypass to replace the faulty plastic design. Always remember to watch your gauges and even consider replacing this weak plastic component now, before the inevitable failure.
